Iraqi President and Prime Minister Named

AirTalk for June 1, 2004

The Iraqi Governing Council named a new president today and then disbanded rather than staying in office until the transfer of sovereignty in June. The appointed president, Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer, was not the favored choice of the American lead CPA (Coalition Provisional Authority) but Iraqi leaders rejected the U.S.-backed candidate. On Friday the Council appointed Iyad Allawi to be prime minister of the incoming government, a more powerful position than president. Allawi also announced a 30-member Cabinet that will begin negotiations on the status of US-led international forces in Iraq after June 3. Dr. Lewis Snider, Associate Professor of Political Science at the School of Politics and Economics at Claremont Graduate University, joins Host Larry Mantle to discuss the issue.

What is John Kerry's Foreign Policy Platform?

AirTalk for June 1, 2004

Last week President Bush spoke to the nation in a major foreign policy address in which he outlined his plans to transfer sovereignty to the Iraqis and stay the course in the war on terrorism. In response, Senator John Kerry on Thursday started to speak out about his foreign policy initiatives, partly with attacks on the Bush administration's approach to the war in Iraq and partly with a presentation of his alternatives to the Bush approach. Larry Mantle discusses Kerry's foreign policy, how it differs from the President's, and how it will resonate with voters as we approach the November presidential election. Joining Larry is Robert Andrews, Congressman representing the First Congressional District of New Jersey, and David Menefee-Libey, Associate Professor of Politics at Pomona College.

The Black Dahlia Solved, Maybe

AirTalk for June 1, 2004

In 1947 Elizabeth Short, The Black Dahlia, was found dead in a vacant lot in LA, her body surgically bisected at the waist and horribly mutilated. For almost 60 years, the Black Dahlia case has been one of the most horrific unsolved murders of the 20th century. Larry Mantle talks with author Steve Hodel, former LAPD homicide detective, about his investigation into the murder and his claim that the killer was his own father, Dr. George Hodel. Steve Hodel's book is called Black Dahlia Avenger: A Genius for Murder (Perennial).

Craftsman Style

AirTalk for June 1, 2004

They're quaint and functional, and they're all over Pasadena. Craftsman homes, and the arts and crafts style, are the subject of a new book by Dr. Robert Winter, the Arthur G. Coons Professor of the History of Ideas from Occidental College, Emeritus. Dr. Winter joins Host Larry Mantle to talk about the arts and crafts style, the people who began it, and the politics associated with the movement. Dr. Winter's new book is called Craftsman Style (Abrams).
