DWP Unprepared For Heat Wave
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power was caught off guard during the recent heat wave. The Department didn't expect power demand to reach current levels until 2010. Widespread blackouts have been the result. Larry Mantle discusses the power situation.
LA Times Ocean Series
On Sunday, July 30, the Los Angeles Times will publish a ground-breaking five-part series, "Altered Oceans," that looks at the man-made interlocking stresses that have created more than 150 known "dead zones" in the world's oceans. Those stresses have led to a reduction in marine life, an ever-increasing injury and infection rate among marine mammals and fish, and the dramatic growth of the types of toxic bacteria and algae that ruled the oceans at the dawn of evolution. Larry Mantle talks with Ken Weiss, LA Times staff writer and one of the co-authors of the series.
LA City Housing Bond
The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to put a $1 billion bond measure on the November 7th ballot to fund the construction of affordable housing. If approved by 66 percent of city voters the bond measure would provide $750 million in grants and loans to build affordable rental units and $250 million for loans to first-time homebuyers. Larry speaks with Alan Kingston, the co-chair of the campaign for the affordable housing bond measure.
State Ballot Proposition 1c: The Housing And Emergency Shelter Trust Fund Act Of 2006
Larry Mantle talks with experts about State ballot Proposition 1C, The Housing and Emergency Shelter Trust Fund Act Of 2006. If passed by voters in November, the law would allow a bond purchase of almost 3 billion dollars to be spent on affordable housing projects in California.
