TCE in California's Drinking Water

AirTalk for July 27, 2006

A study released today from the National Research Council finds that there is strong evidence supporting the idea that TCE found in drinking water causes cancer and other health problems. This report confirms the findings of an EPA report released in the year 2000. The defense department had challenged its conclusions, and an additional study was ordered from the National Research Council. California's drinking water contains some of the highest TCE contamination in the nation, including the ground water in the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys. What will be the EPA's recommendations, and how safe is your drinking water? Larry Mantle talks with NRDC Senior Scientist Gina Solomon, and Gabriel Monares of the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority.

This November, Californians will have the opportunity to vote on Proposition 89, the Clean Money and Fair Elections Act. Under Prop 89 candidates would qualify for public financing of their campaign by agreeing to limit spending, gathering a set number of signatures and $5 qualifying donations, and participating in at least one primary and two general election debates. Larry and his guests discuss the pros and cons of the measure.

Los Angeles Times Loses Bid Learn Names Of Private Contractors In Iraq

AirTalk for July 27, 2006

The U.S. government can keep secret the names of private security contractors involved in serious shooting incidents in Iraq, a federal judge has ruled, rejecting a Freedom of Information Act request by the Los Angeles Times. U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper in Los Angeles said Tuesday that she deferred to the judgment of Army officers who said the disclosure could "provide an advantage to insurgents" and aid them in targeting contractors who provide protection at job sites. Larry Mantle takes listener calls and talks with Bob Steele of the Poynter Institute.

For anyone fed up the unrelenting frustration of traffic in Southern California, David Rizzo, alias Dr. Roadmap, has solutions. In his new book, "Survive the Drive," Rizzo helps aggravated motorists dodge a Sigalert, find alternate routes around major accidents and cope with the stress of commuting long distances. The former radio reporter and commuter columnist joins Larry Mantle with a variety of tips on driving in Los Angeles and the surrounding metropolitan area.
