Larry Mantle discusses how statistics shape our thinking about social issues with author of Damned Lies and Statistics: Untangling Numbers from the Media, Politicians, and Activists (University of California Press) Joel Best. His book highlights many contemporary issues such as abortion, cyberporn, homelessness and the U.S. census, among others, and the ways to detect the correct or incorrect numbers behind them.
