Power Emergency Declared
Continued searing heat prompted California power officials Monday to declare a "Stage 2" power emergency, while utility companies and city leaders again urged residents to conserve electricity. The Stage 2 emergency, which was declared by the California Independent System Operator, means there could be some "voluntary" interruptions for businesses and residents that have previously agreed to be subject to blackouts. Larry Mantle talks with guests about the meteorological origins of the excessive heat we are experiencing and how state's energy operators are managing the distribution of electricity to serve the record demand.
Foundation Sues LAUSD To Halt Magnet Programs
The American Civil Rights Foundation, a non profit organization, has filed suit to halt magnet programs in the LAUSD. The lawsuit claims that the district is in violation of Proposition 209 because it uses race in determining admission to magnet school programs. Prop. 209, passed by California voters in 1996, prohibits the consideration of race in hiring or admissions to California's public schools and institutions. Larry Mantle talks with guests about the lawsuit and its implications for LAUSD's magnet school programs.
