How Reliable is DNA Testing?

AirTalk for July 23, 2008

Scientists and attorneys around the country are questioning the reliability of DNA testing, once considered the forensic gold standard, in solving crimes. The controversy stems from the findings of one lone researcher in Arizona who discovered rare DNA matches in two men of different races. The FBI disputes these findings as "meaningless" and has tried to block similar searches in other states' DNA databases. Larry talks with Jason Felch, investigative reporter, LA Times, David Kaye, Regents Professor, Arizona State University, and Paul Coleman, Senior Criminalist, LA County Sheriff's crime lab about these disturbing doubts about DNA.

Serbian War Criminal Arrested

AirTalk for July 23, 2008

Former Bosnian Serb President and war crimes fugitive Radovan Karadzic was arrested on Monday by Serbian security forces. Karadzic, one of the world's most wanted men, has been in hiding since 1998. He was indicted by the U.N. War Crimes Tribunal for former Yugoslavia for genocide during the 1992-95 Bosnian war. Karadzic, the leader of ethnic Serbs during the war that erupted with Bosnia's secession from Yugoslavia, is accused of orchestrating the slaughter of thousands of Bosnian Muslim men and boys. Larry talks with Diane Orentlicher, Professor of International Law at American University, about his arrest and upcoming trial.

Sleeping With The Boss

AirTalk for July 23, 2008

Would you hire your husband? Or how about your wife? More and more, spouses are saying yes to these questions and starting businesses together. Generally, these couples say their unconventional partnerships work, as long as their respective roles are carefully delineated. But some family advisers say whatever the route, the deck is stacked against couples working well together. Larry talks with Joseph Astrachan, Executive Director of the Cox Family Enterprise Center at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, Erin Bowes and John Pawek, married co-owners of MSA Planning & Design Consultants, about the challenges and rewards of merging love and business.
