Liberia

AirTalk for July 22, 2003

A barrage of mortars shook the Liberian capital of Monrovia on Monday, with one hitting the U.S. Embassy compound. Liberians have lined up bodies outside the U.S. Embassy to show the results of more than a decade of unrest in the country. Larry Mantle discusses the current political situation in Liberia with P. Edward Haley, Professor of International Relations and Professor of Government for Claremont McKenna College, and Claremont Graduate School, and Janet Fleischman, Washington Director for Africa for Human Rights Watch.

Affordable Housing

AirTalk for July 22, 2003

The City of Los Angeles is debating mandating an inclusionary housing ordinance. Inclusionary housing ordinances involve developers building a certain percentage of units for low-income residents, while the rest of a proposed development is rented or sold at market value. Supporters of the issue claim that such an ordinance will not drive builders from the city, but critics say that this would place an unfair burden on developers, who might, in turn, pass along the cost of subsidizing low-income housing to the market value renters. Joining host Larry Mantle to discuss mandatory inclusionary housing is Carol Shatz, President and CEO of the Central City Association of Los Angeles, a business association, and Sam Mistrano, Deputy Director of the Southern California Association of Non-Profit Housing. Opening the segment is a story about "inclusionary zoning" by KPCC reporter Robin Urevich.

The Culture Of Nudism

AirTalk for July 22, 2003

It's good to feel the water against your skin, especially without a swimsuit. That's one of the things that nudists, or naturists, like to do at naturist resorts, or nudist camps. Joining host Larry Mantle is Dian Hansen, Taschen's Sexy Books editor has a new book called Naked As a Jaybird. It chronicles the nudist magazine called Jaybird, popular in the 60s and 70s. Also joining Larry is Stephen Payne, founder of Desert Shadows Inn Resort and Villas, a nudist resort in Palm Springs. Where did nudism come from? How has naturism evolved into a booming holiday phenomenon? Is it geared towards sex, or is naturism a more wholesome family experience?
