Judge Threatens to Appoint Third Party to Run California Department of Corrections
A US District Judge said Tuesday that he may appoint a third party to run the California State Department of Corrections, if the Schwarzenegger Administration does not comply with earlier judicial orders to reform. One of the issues of contention is a labor contract negotiated between the Governor and the CCPOA (California Correctional Peace Officer's Association). Joining Larry is Steve Fama, a lawyer with the Prison Law Office, a prisoner's rights advocate organization, Terri Carbaugh, deputy press secretary in Governor Schwarzenegger's office, and Lance Corcoran, Executive Vice President for the CCPOA, the California Correctional Peace Officers' Association.
U.N. Peacekeepers in Desperate Situations
Three young people just published Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures, (Miramax Books 2004) which chronicles their experiences, both separate and joint, as UN Peacekeepers in the far corners of the world. They met in Cambodia during its first democratic election, having been drawn there for different reasons. Authors Kenneth Cain, Heidi Postlewait, and Andrew Thomson, join Larry Mantle to discuss their unique memoir about the desperate measures they took to find human connection amid adventure and terror.

The History of California Baseball
Larry Mantle talks with author Kevin Nelson about his new book The Golden Game: The Story of California Baseball (Heyday books), that chronicles more than 150 years of baseball history from sandlot ball in the 1850's to the arrival of the state's five major league teams and beyond. It is a narrative of California's unique role in the sport as a birthplace and proving ground for more major leaguers than any other state.
