CHARGES FILED AGAINST SADDAM HUSSEIN
The first criminal case has been filed against former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein for his alleged role in a 1982 massacre of more than 150 people in the Shiite Muslim village of Dujail. He could be tried as early as September. Larry talks about the case with Christian Science Monitor correspondent Neil MacDonald and Diane Orentlicher Professor of International Law and co-director of Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American Law School.
TELEVISION GOES DIGITAL
Broadcasters have agreed to stop transmitting analog television signals by 2009. After that, all transmission will be digital and anyone who owns an analog TV set will need an adapter to receive programs over the airwaves. Larry talks to Alex Ben Block, editor of Television Week and a regular commentator on KPCC’s Call Sheet, Janine Kenney, senior policy analyst for the Consumer’s Union, which publishes Consumer Reporters, and Dennis Wharton, a Senior Vice President at the National Association of Broadcasters.
LAGGING IRAQI OIL OUTPUT
Iraq’s vast oil fields have the potential to rival Saudi Arabia’s mega-production but for many reasons the new Iraqi government has failed to make good on its promise to increase Iraq’s oil output. Larry Mantle talks with George Orwel of Petroleum Intelligence Weekly and Gal Luft of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security about Iraq’s disappointing oil production and the complex problems facing the re-establishment of the country’s oil infrastructure.
