National Intelligence Estimate

AirTalk for July 17, 2007

Today the National Intelligence Estimate which focuses on national security threats to the United States will be released to President George W. Bush and Congress. The document, prepared by 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, has been in the works for roughly two years. The analysis contains information indicating that Al-Qaida has used its safe haven along the Afghan-Pakistan border to restore its operating capabilities to a level unseen since the months before Sept. 11, 2001. Larry talks with Brian Michael Jenkins of the Rand Corporation, Larry Johnson, consultant for the US Military's special operations forces, Steven Emerson, of The Investigative Project on Terrorism, James Phillips of The Heritage Foundation and Michael Scheuer of The Jamestown Foundation about the NIE.

Larry Mantle talks with Judge Jim Miliken, former presiding Juvenile Court Judge from San Diego County, Richard McKenzie, author of The Home: A Memoir of Growing Up in an Orphanage (Dickens Press), and Angela Carter, Deputy Director of Los Angeles County Child & Family Services, about the success of San Diego County's San Pasqual Academy, and whether or not the orphanage is ripe for a comeback.

Some say he may be better off with a lean, mean, more nimble campaign in the second tier and moving his way up later. Larry talks to Duf Sundheim, immediate past Chairman of the California Republican Party, and Dan Schnur, Republican political strategist at UC Berkeley about the options before John McCain.
