Toddler Shooting
The recent LAPD shooting of Jose Pena and his infant daughter has angered Latinos and others who claim that the officers acted in a careless and indiscriminate manner. The girl died from a single gunshot wound to the head, and her father died of multiple gunshot wounds. Police Chief William Bratton sent his condolences to the girl's family but adamantly maintained that Pena was responsible for his and his daughter's deaths. Guest host Ted Chen talks about police and community reaction to the incident.
Juvenile Mental Health in Detention Facilities
California Connected host and associate producer discuss a story airing tonight on KCET (Friday, July 15th) profiling the Northern California Regional Facility in Humboldt County and its comprehensive approach to mental health issues facing its juvenile inmates. Most detention facilities in California are ill equipped to appropriately deal with this segment of the population; however, this is the only juvenile facility in California where the school district, probation office, and mental health departments collaborate to provide the care necessary to keep troubled youth out of future trouble. Guests will discuss issues surrounding the topic, as well as, their unique experiences filming and interviewing youth housed in the facility.
