The Colorado River Delta

AirTalk for July 15, 2003

A visitor to the Colorado River Delta in the 1920's described it as like the Nile or the Indus; thick with fish, with "snow fields of egrets," clouds of birds, and teeming with jaguars and coyotes. The Delta used to be the size of Connecticut, receiving all of the Colorado River's water before it emptied into the Gulf of California. Now it receives about 2%, most of the river's water going to urban areas in California, Nevada and Arizona. Many species have been affected by the shrinking of the Delta, including the endangered Yuma Clapper Rail. Larry Mantle speaks with Charles Bergman, author of Red Delta: Fighting for Life at the End of the Colorado River, Jennifer Pitt, Senior Policy Analyst for the Ecosystem Restoration Program at Environmental Defense, Exequiel Ezcurra, President of the National Institute of Ecology in Mexico, and Charles Wilkinson, Professor of Law at the University of Colorado School of Law about the Delta's history, it's ecology and it's future.
