A city task force is advising the LAPD that it risks a crisis like the Rampart corruption scandal seven years ago without major reforms.The panel recommended an outside group investigate future police abuse. It also proposed overhauling the police disciplinary system, and expanding the size and independence of the commission's inspector general office, among other reforms.

Governor Schwarzenegger's Prison Reform Plan

Governor Schwarzenegger recently released a three-point-six billion dollar plan to reform the state's prisons. In addition to a proposal to send 5,000 jailed illegal immigrants to prisons in other states, the Governor also recommends that California add another 51-thousand prison beds over the next 15 years. Israel Marches Into Lebanon and The Humanitarian Crisis In Gaza

Hezbollah militants moved into Israel and captured two Israeli soldiers. Israel then responded by moving into southern Lebanon with warplanes, tanks and gunboats. From profiles of the frontier-style lawmen hired to stop the initial mayhem to an analysis of the the city's modern sheriff's office-the largest in America-Crongeyer draws comparisons between the uproar of the early days, the racial tensions that erupted during the Watts riots, and the safety issues that preoccupy the police force today.
