Delegation On Homelessness Returns From New York

AirTalk for January 30, 2006

A group of Los Angeles law enforcement officials, judicial representatives, homeless advocates, economic development leaders and legislators went to New York to meet with their counterparts there in order to discuss the issue of homelessness. Senator Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) announces legislation this week that will target the problems facing LA’s skid row. He joins Larry, along with two other members of the delegation, Jan Perry, Los Angeles City councilwoman (District 9), and Orlando Ward, Head of Public Relations for the Midnight Mission and serves as a city commissioner.

How California Will Comply With HAVA (Help America Vote Act)

AirTalk for January 30, 2006

The federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) requires every polling place used in a federal election to include at least one voting machine that disabled voters can use to vote independently. California law requires all direct recording electronic (DRE) machines to be equipped with an accessible voter verified paper audit trail (AVVPAT), which allows voters to verify their votes were correctly recorded. State Senator Deborah Bowen recently held a hearing to examine how California will comply with HAVA. Larry talks with Senator Bowen and Neal Kelley, Orange County Registrar of Voter, about what needs to happen throughout the state in order to be ready for the 2006 elections.

Presidential Powers In Wartime, Part II

AirTalk for January 30, 2006

Samuel Alito’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings were peppered with discussion of the limits of presidential power. Indeed, the allocation of power is central to the operation of a constitutional government. Two weeks ago, we heard from John Yoo about his views on presidential powers in wartime. Noah Feldman, author of the recent New York Times Magazine piece “Who can check the President?” joins Larry today, to share his perspective.

Winning The Race

AirTalk for January 30, 2006

In his new book Winning the Race (Gotham Books), John McWhorter explores his hypothesis that the attitude of defiance toward authority embraced by the black community now, or “therapeutic alienation” in his words, is the only way to be “truly black.” With the number of black national leaders and CEOs on the rise, McWhorter calls on blacks to reject an identity of victim-hood and to pursue the opportunities that were not available to black people fifty years ago. He speaks with Larry to share his thoughts on therapeutic alienation and how we as a nation can achieve a new social transformation in black America.
