Tenet Healthcare Corporation to Sell Nineteen Hospitals

Tenet Healthcare Corporation announced that it intends to sell nineteen of its medical facilities in California, due largely to $1.6 billion in earthquake retrofitting costs. The LA Times reports that Tenet says it hopes to find buyers for the hospitals, but that it cannot guarantee all will remain open. Joining Larry Mantle to discuss the potential impact of this announcement on health care in the southland is Steve Newman, CEO of Tenet CA, Zev Yaroslavsky, LA County Supervisor, Chris Norby, member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, and Dr. Ralph Cygan, CEO of UCI Medical Center.

Rebuttal to the Wal-mart Study

Larry talks with experts who challenge the positive findings of a study released Tuesday by the LA Economic Development Corporation on the potential economic impact of building Wal-Mart Supercenters in Southern California. Joining him is Rick Icaza, President of United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 770, Charles Fishman, Senior Writer for Fast Company, and Bob Rodino, PhD., Economist and independent consultant on "Big Box" development for the City Los Angeles.

Finding An Alternate Energy Source to Oil

Larry Mantle speaks with Caltech Professor of Physics David Goodstein about his new book, Out of Gas: The End of the Age of Oil (Norton). In it, Professor Goodstein says that we cannot keep relying on oil, because we will soon run out of it. His book explores alternate energy sources and warns that we must be more aggressive about developing them, before our oil sources run dry.
