Mistakes, Rumors and Responsibility: Covering Breaking News

AirTalk for January 27, 2006

Few stories demonstrate the pitfalls of covering breaking news like that of the West Virginia mine disaster. “12 Miners Alive” and “Miracle in the Mine” are just some of the erroneous headlines newspapers ran earlier this month. Broadcast outlets made the same mistake, announcing this “incredible news.” Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath generated stories of total chaos in New Orleans. Journalists issued reports of rampant murder and mayhem, which turned out to be greatly exaggerated. Larry Mantle moderates a discussion at the USC Annenberg School for Communication on the challenges of covering breaking news.
