Chaos In Caracas
Venezuela has the largest crude oil reserves in the hemisphere yet thanks to its ruling oligarchies, 80% of its 25 million people live in poverty. In an attempt to challenge the wealthy oligarchs, populist President Hugo Chavez, elected in 1998, declared a revolution and put the nationÍs oil fields in the hands of inept socialist managers. As a result, the country has fallen into a deep economic depression and Chavez opponents have countered by leading a seven-week strike that has left seven dead and the oil industry paralyzed. Larry Mantle discusses the chaotic situation in Venezuela and the effects of the strike there on US oil prices and the economy with Phil Gunson, freelance reporter for "Newsweek," "The Miami Herald," "The Economist," and National Public Radio.
