Afghanistan Update

AirTalk for January 13, 2004

The Constitutional assembly in Afghanistan has finalized a new constitution, one that gives President Hamid Karzai broad powers. Opposition groups, women and minorities won rights in the constitutional assembly, and elections are scheduled for this summer. But, given Afghanistan's troubled past, how well will all of this work? The Assembly, or Luya Jirga, is a mixture of factions jockeying for power--amidst the backdrop of ongoing violence in a country run by warlords who oversee the drug trade. Joining Larry Mantle is Ambassador Peter Tomsen, former Special Envoy and Ambassador on Afghanistan during George Bush's, Sr., Administration and Congressman Ed Royce, (R.) a senior member of the House International Relations Committee who has been deeply involved in US policy towards Afghanistan since 1993.
