The Democratic And President Bush's Economic Stimulus Package
Larry Mantle discusses both President Bush's and the Democratic plans for American economic stimulus. Bush unfurled his economic stimulus package today. In it, he proposes to cut the tax on corporate stock dividends, advocates a $400 increase deduction per child for families with children, and offers "quick tax relief" for married couples. This is a $670 billion economic stimulus package, to take place over ten years. What does all of this mean in plain English? And how will it affect you? Is this just another Republican "trickle-down" plan, or will it really help all Americans? Joining Larry Mantle to digest this economic stimulus proposal are: U.S. Congressman Christopher Cox, representing the 47th district in Orange County, Congressman Xavier Becerra, representing California's 31st congressional district, Ed Leamer, UCLA Professor of Economics, Management and Statistics, and director of UCLAÍs Anderson Forecast and Alan Reynolds, Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, previously served as director of economic research at the Hudson Institute.
Mentoring
Thousands of students throughout the LAUSD are behind in academic subjects and need extra help with studies and homework but can't rely on family or friends for aid. Academic mentoring programs help struggling students who want to improve skills and grades and can make the difference between success and failure in school. Larry Mantle speaks with Carole Donahue, currently Director of the Los Angeles Unified School District's School Volunteer Program, Academic Mentor Program, and President of the SOS Foundation, and Jim Kooler, PhD, Administrator of the California Friday Night Live Partnership and former director of the Governor's Mentoring Partnership about the mentoring process, how it works, what is required of mentors, and how effective these programs really are.
John And Gerald Clayton
Larry Mantle talks with John Clayton of the Clayton- Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and Jazz pianist Gerald Clayton about their Jazz careers.
