Israeli Defense Force Pushes Into Gaza
When the Israeli war in Gaza began, the government tamped down expectations. The mission was to stop Hamas rocket attacks only by destroying weapons caches and supply tunnels. But lately, some rhetoric has gone further, saying the goal is to destroy Hamas entirely. With the ground war now well underway, what exactly is the Israeli mission? Larry Mantle talks about the conflict with Israeli Counsel for Media and Public Affairs Shahar Azani and Hussein Ibish of the American Task Force on Palestine. Larry also gets an update on the humanitarian situation in Gaza from Gaza City psychiatrist Dr. Eyad Sarraj and Christopher Gunness, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees from Jerusalem.
Obama's Tax Cut Proposal
President-elect Barack Obama will soon unveil his proposal for tax cuts of up to $300 billion. Besides $500 tax cuts for most workers and $1,000 for couples, the Obama plan includes more than $100 billion for businesses, an Obama transition official said. The total value of the tax cuts would be considerably greater than indicated earlier. Larry talks about the proposal with economist John Irons of the Economic Policy Institute and Jack Shaw of Market News International.
