Trouble In Tijuana

AirTalk for January 5, 2007

The municipal police in Tijuana walked off the job yesterday after soldiers and federal agents ordered its members to turn over their weapons in connection with homicide investigations. The walk-out came two days after Mexican President Felipe Calderon dispatched 3,300 federal troops and police to the city in an effort to combat violence linked to drug cartels. Larry talks about the developing situation with Amy Isackson of KPBS in San Diego, who spoke with federal officials at a security checkpoint in Tijuana.

Costa Mesa Prisoners Deported

AirTalk for January 5, 2007

About 10 percent of the 450 people booked in the Costa Mesa City Jail since December 4th have been flagged for immigration violations by an agent from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who began staffing the jail last month to identify criminal aliens incarcerated in the facility who are subject to deportation. Of the 46 identified, six have been deported, twenty are being processed for deportation, and the remaining twenty will be sent to ICE custody. Larry and his guests discuss how, and by whom, immigration status of prisoners is determined, and what happens to those prisoners facing deportation.

Somalia Update

AirTalk for January 5, 2007

Ethiopian-backed government forces have driven out the Islamic movement that had controlled Mogadishu and much of southern Somalia for more than six months. The Islamic movement retreated to the southern tip of Somalia and vowed to keep fighting, raising the specter of an Iraq-style guerrilla war. An Islamic militant Web site has said that Osama bin Laden's deputy would soon release a new message calling for Muslims to support Islamic guerrillas in Somalia. Larry and his guests discuss the escalating situation.
