Students interrupted Israel's ambassador to the U.S., Michael Oren, during a talk at UC Irvine last week. Does freedom of speech allow us to shout each other down? Then it's FilmWeek on AirTalk. Larry and critics Wade Major and Claudia Puig review the week's releases including Shutter Island, Ghost Writer, and The Girl On The Train. Then, Charles Solomon joins us to discuss Oscar-nominated live action and animated shorts.
A lesson in free speech at UC Irvine
Earlier this month, Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren gave a talk at UC Irvine on U.S.-Israeli relations. Oren's appearance, sponsored by the law school and political science department, was interrupted 10 times by students expressing their disagreement, resulting in 11 arrests. Supporters of the students argue that they were exercising their First Amendment rights, while critics counter that there is an appropriate time and place for freedom of expression. What are the limits of free speech?
