Iraqi Election Results are Certified

The election in Iraq is over, and the results have been certified. The Shia United Alliance Party won a majority of the seats in the National Assembly (140); the Kurds won 75 seats, and Iyad Allawi's party won 40 seats. Joining Larry to discuss the election's winners and losers is Mark LeVine, Associate Professor of History at UC Irvine, Basam Al-Husseini, Spokesman for the Future of Iraq Group and national trainer for the Iraqi elections in the U.S., and Dr. Saman Shali, Executive Vice President of the Kurdish National Congress of North America.

New America Foundation fellow Jennifer Washburn asks this question in her book UNIVERSITY, INC.,: The Corporate Corruption of Higher Education (Basic Books). Washburn takes a look at how corporations give more and more money to university research programs—with strings attached. She examines the commercialization of the university system, and asks if it is for the benefit of the students. Jennifer Washburn joins Larry Mantle to discuss what she calls the “academic-industrial complex.”
