Demographic Changes Force School Closures

Due to declining enrollment, the Pasadena Unified School Board recently closed three of its elementary schools. The main culprit seems to be rising home prices. Many lower and middle-income Pasadena residents are moving inland, leaving the school district with less money per pupil to spend. Larry Mantle talks about the situation in Pasadena, whose problems are shared by several California school districts. Panelists are Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent Percy Clark, PUSD board president Ed Honowitz, Pasadena City Councilman Sid Tyler, and Chris Brandow of the Pasadena Educational Network.

Winter Olympics Preview

The Opening Ceremonies of the Torino 2006 XX Olympic Winter Games takes place Friday, kicking off 16 days of competition between 2,500 athletes from 85 countries. Larry gets a preview of the games and the 211 athletes who make up the U.S. Olympic team (including 24 from California). Larry talks with Los Angeles Times staff writer Helene Elliot and Orange County Register Reporter Scott Reid from Turin.
