THE DANISH MUHAMMAD CARTOON
Violent protests continued today over the publication of a cartoon in a Danish newspaper that depicted the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban. Denmark's prime minister is calling protests over the cartoon “a growing global crisis.” There have been calls for the death of the cartoon’s artist and boycotts of Danish goods. What is the role, if any, of American Muslims in this issue? Larry discusses this with Salam Al-Maryati, director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council of Los Angeles, and asks callers to weigh in.
CASTAIC JAIL RIOTS
400 inmates in LA County jails were segregated after weekend racial clashes killed one inmate and injured more than 100. The 21,000-inmate system was on partial lockdown Monday and Sheriff Lee Baca said black and Hispanic inmates would remain segregated. Larry talks with the Sheriff and others about this heated issue.
ISRAEL ANNOUNCES PULL OUT FROM WEST BANK
Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that Israel will give up control over most of the West Bank's Palestinians—a bold statement about how he sees Israel's future borders. Larry talks with a journalist in the region and an expert on foreign relations.
SEX SLAVES AND FEMALE TRAFFICKING
Tonight on PBS, FRONTLINE presents a look at the world of sexual slavery, talking with traffickers and their victims, and exposing the government indifference that allows the abuses to continue virtually unchecked. In Eastern Europe, since the fall of communism, sex trafficking has become the fastest growing form of organized crime. Larry Mantle talks with Frontline producer Ric Bienstock.
BRAIN ACTIVITY DURING POLITICAL DEBATE
A new study from researchers at Emory University may be able to shed light on why Democrats and Republicans can hear the same information, but walk away with opposite conclusions. When it comes to forming opinions and making judgments on political issues, the study finds that participants use emotionally biased reasoning. Larry talks with the study’s lead researcher, Drew Westen, about the findings and their implications.
