Israeli Elections

AirTalk for February 4, 2003

Israelis went to the polls and gave Ariel Sharon's Likud Party a resounding victory, leaving the left-wing Labor Party in danger of losing its status as one of the two main parties in the Knesset. Perhaps more interesting is how the Ultra-Orthodox (Sephardic) Shas Party lost seats to the secular, (Ashkenazi) Shinui Party, evidence of the secular-Orthodox tension among Israelis. Now Israel faces the task of building a coalition government. What will it look like? And what will it mean for the peace process and a Palestinian state? Joining host Larry Mantle are Daniel Sokatch, Executive Director of the Progressive Jewish Alliance, and Rabbi Gary Greenebaum of the American Jewish Committee.
