Senate Resolution To Criticize Bush's Plan To Increase Troop Levels In Iraq
Larry talks with Noam Levey of the Los Angeles Times and Jack Shaw of Market News International about the compromise attempt in the U.S. Senate to reach a resolution on President Bush's plan to increase troop levels in Iraq.
Homeless Migration
The LAPD's recent crackdown on crime and blight around downtown L.A.'s skid row has triggered a migration of homeless people who are leaving for other communities. Larry talks with Joel Roberts of People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) and Brenda Wilson of New Image Shelter, about the migration which has placed strain on homeless service providers in other areas including Echo Park, South LA, Hollywood, and Santa Monica.
Eruvs
You may not be aware of it, but you may live within an Eruv. An Eruv can be a thin monofilament wire strung between utility poles and encircling a large area of a city. It physically demarks an extended home for an observant Jew who may then, for example, carry prayer books and keys or push strollers within the Eruv line on the Sabbath, all without violating Jewish law. There are many large Eruvs within the communities of Southern California but last week opposition from the community forced the Agoura Hills/Westlake Village/Oak Park Eruv to be removed. Larry discusses the purpose of the Eruv in the observant Jewish community and the controversy surrounding them with Rabbi David Eliezrie of the Rabbinical Council of Orange County and Brad Greenberg, staff writer for the LA Daily News.
Combatants For Peace
A former Israeli soldier and a former Palestinian combatant and prisoner share their thoughts and experiences of the conflict in the middle-east. Shimon Katz and Suleiman Al Hamri work with Combatants for Peace, a joint Israeli-Palestinian group, working for non-violent solutions to the struggle. Larry speaks with them about the non-military approach they believe is the only way to solve the ongoing situation.
The U.S. Supreme Court
Drawing on unprecedented access to the Supreme Court justices and their inner circles, ABC News legal correspondent Jan Crawford Greenburg tells the story of the recent history of the U.S. Supreme Court in her new book, Supreme Conflict: The Inside Story of the Struggle for Control of the United States Supreme Court ( Penguin). Larry talks with Greenburg who argues that in one area the current President Bush has succeeded where his father, as well as Ronald Reagan and Richard M. Nixon, did not: moving the Supreme Court decisively to the right, shaping its direction for the next three to four decades.
