Mudslides And Floods
Guest host Patt Morrison talks with Pat Mead, assistant director with the San Bernardino County Department of Public Works, Jim Wright, deputy director chief of fire protection for California Department of Forestry, and Chip Patterson, PIO from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's office about the dangers of more mudslides and the progress in the Waterman Canyon area.
SAFOD, (the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth project)
Next spring, scientists from the US Geological Survey will go where no one has gone before: 2.2 miles into the San Andreas Fault. SAFOD, the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth project, will measure earthquakes--how they begin, manifest themselves and end. The project will also explore the material composition of the fault. Scientists hope that SAFOD will ultimately help them to predict earthquakes. Steve Hickman, Senior Research Scientist and Kenneth Hudnut, Ph.D., geophysicist with the US Geological Survey in Pasadena join Host Patt Morrison.
An Account Of The Bush Adminstration's Foreign Policy
Political commentator, filmmaker, scholar and cultural critic Saul Landau joins Patt Morrison to critique the Bush administration's foreign policy. In his new book The Pre-Emptive Empire, Landau offers a scathing account of George Bush's world covering everything from the war on terror to the war in Iraq touching on the Patriot Act and economy as well.
Virus-Like Particles: Harmless Mimics
California Institute of Technology President Dr. David Baltimore joins guest Host Patt Morrison to talk about Virus Like Particles, or VLPs. VLPs are non-infectious mimics of viruses and can trigger a strong response in the immune system. So, strong, in fact, that mice infected with the Ebola Virus showed no signs of the disease. VLPs have shown promise in protecting mice from other viruses, including HIV.
