THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS?

AirTalk for December 23, 2005

It’s great to get into the holiday spirit, but when you greet someone should you say Merry Christmas? Happy Holidays? Merry Tidings? Or happy non-denominational winter holiday period? It’s one thing to decide this question on a personal level, but it becomes a whole different matter when you’re an advertiser, a retailer or a politician trying not to offend anyone. Some Christian groups are upset about the loss of the word “Christmas” in promotional materials. There’s also a debate going on because White House cards no longer say “Merry Christmas”. And locally, there was a controversy at Paseo Colorado, the mall just up the street from our studios here in Pasadena, when a decision was made to pull a Chanukah display. Larry talks to listeners about this perennial question.
