Wal-Mart's Plans to Come to Los Angeles
Last Thursday, two community groups filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court to stop a ballot initiative in that would allow a Wal-Mart Supercenter to be built in Inglewood. Larry talks with Reverend Altagracia Perez, Holy Faith Episcopal Church, about her opposition to the giant retailer's expansion into the Southern California grocery market. Then he'll examine how Wal-Mart has managed to become the most power company in the world and how the proliferation of Wal-Mart stores affects local, regional and nation economies. Joining Larry are Bernard Parks, Los Angeles City Council member from the 8th council district, Pete Kanelos, Regional Director of Government Relations, Abigail Goldman, Los Angeles Times staff writer and Burt Flickinger, III, Managing Director of the Strategic Resources Group, a consulting firm in New York.
The Increased Terrorist Threat
On Sunday, the Office of Homeland Security secretary Tom Ridge announced that the Bush administration raised the nation's antiterrorism alert status a notch on Sunday, indicating a newly heightened concern about the possibility of an attack in coming days. Larry discusses the elevated threat with Nico Melendez, Regional Director of Public Affairs for the Transportation Security Administration, Bernard K. Melekian, Chief of Police for the Pasadena Police Department, LAPD Chief William Bratton and Lance Jones, Chief Warrant Officer for the U.S. Coast Guard.
