LAUSD to cut new, weak teachers

Listen 38:54
LAUSD to cut new, weak teachers

LA schools Superintendent Ramon Cortines wants ineffective new teachers fired before they gain tenure. If a new round of layoffs occurs next summer, this could allow LAUSD to retain promising teachers who have less experience in the classroom. Does this approach give new teachers enough time to become acclimated to their jobs? And what, if anything, will be done about weak teachers who already have tenure?

Guests:

Jason Song, staff writer, LA Times

A.J. Duffy, President, UTLA - United Teachers Los Angeles

Cop15 climate treaty? No deal.

Listen 9:29
Cop15 climate treaty? No deal.

The global climate summit in Copenhagen ends today. President Obama addressed the delegations and met privately with China, though talks seemed to falter. Will the nations of the world agree to carbon emission thresholds, maximum temperature gain, or, well, anything? Will all the talking provoke any action? We check in with KQED's Rob Schmitz, who has followed the California delegation throughout the Cop15 conference.

Guest:

Rob Schmitz, reporter for KQED and California Report joining us from Copenhagen, Denmark
