Faculty-Student Relationships

AirTalk for December 16, 2002

In the last few years, more and more colleges and universities have adopted policies prohibiting professors from dating their students. Now the entire UC system is considering a formal ban on professors dating students after the Dean of UC Berkeley’s Law School was accused by a student of sexual assault. Larry Mantle talks with Barry Dank, Professor of Sociology at Cal State Long Beach, and editor of the academic quarterly, Sexuality and Culture. He is married to one of his former students. Also joining Larry is Maryanne Horowitz, a Professor of History at Occidental College. She is the school’s Title 9 officer. They discuss whether or not schools should get involved in faculty/student relationships.
