Leadership For California's Stem Cell Institute
The stem cell institute created by Proposition 71 is supposed to begin work within a week. A Chair for the institute still needs to be chosen, something that will happen in San Francisco on Friday. Who will choose the head of this trail-blazing embryonic stem cell institute, the first such venture in the United States, funded to the tune of $3 billion by California voters? How will the Board work, and when will scientists begin work? Bob Stern, President, Center for Governmental Studies, and Gay Crooks, MD Associate Prof. Of Pediatrics at Keck School of Medicine at USC join Host Larry Mantle to discuss the leadership of the stem cell institute and its accountability to the voters who created it.
Education in California
Larry Mantle talks with State Senator and newly appointed Chairman of the California Senate Education Committee Jack Scott, and California Secretary of Education Richard Riordan about the educational climate in California. They will discuss what ideas are working, and challenges that face California’s educational system, and the future of education in California.
Teens Are Having Less Sex, and Using Contraceptives More
A new study from the Centers for Disease Control shows that teen sexual activity declined significantly from 1995 to 2004, and that contraceptive use among teens has improved. Larry Mantle talks with the study’s lead statistician Joyce Abma and Carol McCord, sex educator and sex therapist with the Kinsey Institute and Planned Parenthood at Indiana University.
The Lakers
