Transfats May Be Banned in New York City

AirTalk for December 6, 2006

New York City has often been on the forefront of public health initiatives. In an effort to clean the air, it was one of the first cities to restrict smoking in restaurants and office buildings. Now the New York City Health Department and Mayor Michael Bloomberg are trying to clean local arteries by banning transfats from restaurants. Is this a forward-thinking public health measure or an example of excessive paternalism? And will Los Angeles someday adopt a similar measure? Larry talks to experts about this important health issue.

More Evidence of Water on Mars?

AirTalk for December 6, 2006

Surfs up...on Mars? It certainly looks that way. NASA photographs of Mars reveal that water probably ran through some gullies on the Red Planet within the last seven years. Liquid water, as opposed to the water ice and water vapor known to exist at Mars, is considered necessary for life. The new findings heighten intrigue about the potential for microbial life on Mars. Larry talks to a Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist about this exciting new development.

Magritte and Comtemporary Art at LACMA

AirTalk for December 6, 2006

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is presenting the first major exhibition to fully explore the impact of Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte's work on U.S. and European artists of the postwar generation. "Magritte and Contemporary Art: The Treachery of Images" features sixty-eight paintings and drawings by Magritte, as well as an equal number of works by thirty-one contemporary artists, including Marcel Broodthaers, Vija Celmins, Robert Gober, Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, and Ed Ruscha. This exhibition has been specially designed by conceptual artist John Baldessari and will be on view only at LACMA. Larry discusses the exhibition with Baldesarri, LACMA Director Michael Govan, and the exhibit's co-curator, Stephanie Barron.
