AirTalk for December 2, 2004

AirTalk broadcasts Tuesday night’s engaging discussions addressing two, huge projects affecting Orange County residents: The CenterLine and the the Great Park.

The CenterLine project would bring light rail to Orange County, with the first segment connecting the Santa Ana Transportation System with John Wayne Airport. The estimated cost of this 9.3-mile route is $1 billion. Proponents contend that light rail is the best way to handle the overburdened Orange County transportation network. Opponents argue that this is a costly project that will be underused and will divert funds from road-oriented projects. Guests include City of Irvine’s Mayor-elect Beth Krom, and Orange County Supervisor Chris Norby. He also takes audience questions.

The Great Park is a proposed mix of retail, housing, and recreational development to be constructed on the former El Toro Marine Corps base. The panel discussion will examine this large-scale project and the attendant environmental, traffic and economic issues. Panelists are Restoration Advisory Board member Gregory F. Hurley, Great Park Corporation Chair Chris Mears, and Dean Gould, base closure manager for Marine Corps Air stations Tustin and El Toro.
