Morality in War

AirTalk for August 27, 2002

What is moral in war? We take a look at what our officers are taught about morality in war and discuss war by proxy. America fights with groups, like the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, who have tainted human rights records, as reported in NewsweekÆs recent article "The Death Convoy of Afghanistan". Can we even speak about war and morality in the same sentence? Roger Worthheimer, Distinguished Chair of Ethics at the US Naval Academy, and John R. Popiden, Associate Professor of Theological Studies and Associate Dean, Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts at Loyola Marymount University join guest host Patt Morrison for the discussion.

Hippie Culture

AirTalk for August 27, 2002

We talk about the hippie culture of the 1960s and 1970s and ask what happened to hippie ideals. Guest host Patt Morrison speaks with John McCleary, author of The Hippie Dictionary: A Cultural Encyclopedia of the 1960s and 1970s. McClearyÆs book contains thousands of entries, from the Monterey Pop Festival to the phrase œright on.” He and Todd Gitlin, professor of journalism and sociology at Columbia University and author of The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage, discuss the era.
