Compassionate release
Despite objections from U.S. officials and victims' families, the Scottish government granted early release to the only person convicted in the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland. After serving eight years of his life sentence, Abdel Basset Ali Megrahi was released on "compassionate grounds" due to his terminal case of prostate cancer. Last month in California, a state parole board decided that Deborah Peagler could be released from her life sentence because she has terminal lung cancer. Peagler has served 25 years in prison for the murder of her abusive pimp boyfriend, and Governor Schwarzenegger has until today to decide whether to reverse the decision. For inmates convicted of egregious crimes, are there instances that allow for compassionate release?
