McCain And Obama's Joint Appearance At O.C. Church

AirTalk for August 15, 2008

This Saturday, both presumptive presidential nominees will share the stage--if briefly--for the first time. Pastor Rick Warren will interview each candidate for an hour in a forum hosted by Saddleback Church in Lake Forest. Senators John McCain and Barack Obama will each discuss faith in public life, AIDS, the environment and other issues. The event has drawn national attention from evangelicals, who account for one in four adults and whose vote was instrumental in electing George W. Bush in 2004. At least 15 groups are expected to stage protests as well, including anti-war groups, Minutemen and others.

Why We Drive The Way We Do?

AirTalk for August 15, 2008

You probably do it every day... get in the car, start the ignition, and drive off. Most people don't realize driving is actually an enormously complex and mentally taxing enterprise. Motorists are bombarded with information and, just as often, illusions that cause them to make less-than-ideal decisions. For example, drivers who are seated high--such as drivers of SUVs and trucks--think they are driving more slowly than drivers of low-to-the-ground cars. And why is that the other lanes always appears to be moving faster? They're not, but the impression that they are causes people to change lanes, which results in slower traffic flow. Author Tom Vanderbilt explores these quirks and others in "Traffic: Why we Drive the Way We Do (and What it Says About us)" (Knopf).
