What The Heck Is Up (And Down) With Oil?
For a while there, it seemed like oil prices could only go one direction--up and up fast. But as it happens, demand is down, and prices have come down to a still painful but lower $115 for a barrel of crude. Prices at the pump slid too, with unleaded averaging $3.78. That's down from a peak of $4.11 last month. Welcome relief...but is the respite temporary? And what's driving it... less consumption? Or is something else going on? And what's the long term forecast? Larry and guests Severin Borenstein, Director of the University of California Energy Institute, and Robert Hirsch, Senior Energy Advisor, for Management Information Services Inc. take a look.
The STAR 2008 Scores
State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O'Connell joins Larry to discuss the results of the Standardized Testing And Reporting (STAR) 2008 scores.
Inland Empire Journalists Roundtable
Larry talks with Steven Cuevas, KPCC's Inland Empire Reporter, Cassie MacDuff, columnist with The Press Enterprise, and David Kelly, staff writer for the L.A. Times, about the latest news, events, and developments in the Inland Empire.
Update On Geriatrics
In the next couple of decades the population of California residents over the age of 65 is expected to double, yet the number of medical students pursuing elder care continues to drop. In the state of California, there is one geriatrician for every 6,000 senior citizens. As Baby Boomers approach retirement, will there be enough doctors specializing in geriatric medicine to go around? Larry talks with Dr. Edward Schneider of the USC School of Gerontology and Dr. David Reuben, chief of geriatric medicine at the UCLA Medical Center, about the state of geriatric medicine in California and the nation.
Interfaith Understanding In America
In the last few years religion has been a divisive issue at the forefront of public thought and political campaigns. Yet there is a movement of inter-religious cooperation happening at the grassroots level across the country. In his book "Beyond Tolerance: Searching for Interfaith Understanding in America," Gustav Niebuhr shares stories of Americans who have gone beyond merely tolerating other religions to engaging with them in efforts for greater religious understanding.
