Bob Hertzberg Enters The Race For L.A. Mayor
Former California Assembly speaker Bob Hertzberg has announced his intention to run for Los Angeles Mayor in the 2005 election. His campaign slogan, “Moving Los Angeles Forward,” reflects his view that LA needs bold, new initiatives to make the city great and that voters should reject Mayor James Hahn who in Herztberg’s opinion is “asleep at the switch.”
A History Of American Secularism
Journalist and author Susan Jacoby joins Host Larry Mantle to discuss her new book Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism. Jacoby’s book discusses “freethinkers,” or secular thinkers, throughout American history, and how they have clashed with religious beliefs and institutions, creating the kind of “culture war” between the Left and the Right that we have today. Ironically, Jacoby writes that the separation of church and state outlined in the US Constitution is the very thing that has allowed religion to color public affairs in this country, unlike the civic societies of most Western countries.
