Meeting to Address Gang Violence at Jefferson High
Parents and community members met last night at Jefferson High School in South Los Angeles to hear what the school district will do to address gang violence. This meeting comes after two racially and gang-motivated fights in recent days between black and Latino students on the campus. In the latest incident, on Monday, over 100 black and Latino students fought near the cafeteria. Authorities arrested two students, and there were injuries, including a broken hip. Larry speaks with KPCC reporter Adolfo Guzman-Lopez; Jan Perry, LA City Councilwoman representing the 9th district; Raul Preciado, C-track Student Body President at Jefferson High; Rowena Lagrosa, Superintendent of LAUSD’s local district 5; Mark Ridley-Thomas, Democratic State Assemblyman representing the 48th district, and Thyonne Gordon, Executive Director of “A Place Called Home,” Community Center on 23rd and Central, blocks away from Jefferson High School. They discuss the issues of gang violence and racial tension at Jefferson High.
High Cost of Developing Rental Units in Los Angeles
A Los Angeles Business Journal article from this week’s issue spotlights the high cost to developers of building rental units in the Los Angeles area, and how developers are finding that the math is not adding up for their rental returns vs. the costs of building. The trend is that developers are favoring building condos much more than rental units, causing a further crunch in the already-tight rental market. Stuart Gabriel, Director and Lusk Chair in Real Estate at the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate, Alan Kingston, President and CEO of Century Housing, an affordable housing lender, and Greg Vilkin, President of Residential Development for Forest City Enterprises, join Larry to discuss the issue.
LA City Councilman Eric Garcetti on Saving Energy
Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles City Councilman from the 13th district, speaks with Larry Mantle from the Arctic Circle where he is visiting with the environmental organization Global Green to highlight Earth Day and the importance of energy conservation and sustainability.
