Condom Requirement for the Adult Film Industry

AirTalk for April 21, 2004

Recent HIV infection of two porn stars has given state and county officials the leverage that they say they need to force adult-film actors to use condoms. The state Division of Occupational Health and Safety plans inspections of adult film sets this week, marking the first time Cal/OSHA has investigated the porn industry. Larry Mantle speaks with Jonathan Fielding, the LA County’s Director of Public Health, and Tim Connelly, editor and publisher of Adult Video News (AVN) magazine, about a possible condom requirement for adult film actors and the effect that it may have on the film industry.

Sleep Disorders In Children

AirTalk for April 21, 2004

Almost seventy percent of children aged ten and under experience some type of sleep problem. Many parents may not be aware that children, like adults, have sleep disorders that can be treated. But how do you know if your child’s sleep problem is a passing phase or a disorder that needs medical attention? As a part of KPCC’s ongoing Health Dialogues series, Larry Mantle discusses the complexity of diagnosing and treating sleep disorders in children. Joining him is Dr. Daniel Lewin, Director of Behavioral Sleep Medicine, Children’s National Medical Center in D.C., and Dr. Thomas Anders, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, U.C. Davis M.I.N.D. Institute.

The Perils of Crossing the US-Mexico Border

AirTalk for April 21, 2004

Luis Alberto Urrea joins Host Larry Mantle to discuss his new book called The Devil’s Highway: A True Story (Little, Brown). It is the story of a group of twenty-six undocumented immigrants who tried to cross the US-Mexico border near Yuma, Arizona in 2001. Twelve survived. Urrea paints a harrowing picture of the journey, in which the desert itself becomes a character, as unscrupulous as the coyotes and rattlesnakes that inhabit it.
