Should I Be Tested For Cancer?

AirTalk for April 19, 2004

Cancer screening tests are becoming more sensitive, affordable and accessible to more people than ever before. Mammograms, PSAs, Pap smears, colonoscopies, MRIs, to name a few, are impressive in their increased ability to detect more and more cancers earlier. But is there a downside to all this testing? Can these test findings actually do more harm than good? And what about the embarrassing number of false positives resulting from these tests? Larry Mantle explores these questions with Dr. H. Gilbert Welch, Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community and Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. He is the author of the new book entitled Should I Be Tested For Cancer? Maybe Not and Here’s Why (University of California Press).
