In the wake of the suicide of a 22-year-old man in the Men's Central Jail, today the ACLU will release an expert's report on psychosis-inducing conditions at the jail and reveal new details on the circumstances surrounding the detainee's death. The ACLU is calling for facility to be closed, claiming that savings from the jail's closure could provide diversion and housing programs for mentally ill inmates. Larry discusses the report and the feasibility of closing the downtown facility with Melissa Bird of the ACLU,and Steve Whitmore of the LA County Sheriff's Department.

LAUSD Teachers' Jobs Spared

Los Angeles Film Shoots Down 34%

The number of on-location film shoots in the Los Angeles area has fallen to its lowest level on record due to out-of-state economic incentives and the recession. The entertainment industry in Los Angeles lost more than 22,000 jobs in January alone, and demand for filming permits to shoot locally has plunged. Larry Mantle talks with FilmLA President Paul Audley about cutbacks in local film and commercial production and their impact on the area's economy.

New Study Raises Hopes of Restoring Fertility

In a set of experiments involving mice, Chinese researchers have shown for the first time that adult mammals can harbor primitive cells capable of becoming eggs and producing offspring. Their finding challenges the assumption that female mammals are born with all of the eggs they will ever produce. The news raises hopes that we could ultimately delay a woman's biological clock by stimulating cells to produce eggs again or by banking egg-producing cells for later use. Larry Mantle finds out more about this new research from fertility expert Dr. Richard Paulson.
