SEVERE CUTBACK EXPECTED IN WEST COAST SALMON FISHING

AirTalk for April 10, 2006

Larry Mantle discusses the Pacific Fishery Management Council’s recommendation to severely limit commercial, recreational and tribal salmon fishing off the Coast of California and Oregon this year. Some commercial fishermen could be limited to a catch of 75 per week. The proposal is expected to be ratified soon by the National Marine Fisheries Service, part of the Department of Commerce. The recommendation was a response to the dwindling numbers of naturally spawning Chinook Salmon in the Klamath river. The many damns on the Klamath are partly responsible for the decline of the fish, which prevent the fish from reaching their upstream spawning areas.. Four damns of the are up for re-licensing this year by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Fisherman and environmentalists would like the damns removed. Larry Mantle talks with Glenn Spain, Northwest Regional Director of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fisherman’s Associations, Dave Bitts, a salmon fisherman in Eureka, California, and Greg Addington, Executive Director of the Klamath Water Users Association.
