The Fiscal Burden of an Aging Population

AirTalk for April 7, 2004

America is on a collision course with the needs of 77 million baby boomers who will be hobbling into old age in 2030 when there will be twice as many retirees as today and only 18% more workers. In the new book, The Coming Generational Storm: What You Need to Know about America’s Economic Future (The MIT Press), co-author Lawrence Kotlikoff warns us that if government doesn’t act now to head of the “coming generational storm,” we will face skyrocketing tax hikes, lower retirement and health care benefits, high inflation and political instability. The co-authors offer bold new policy solutions to avoid this demographic/ fiscal collision.
