A new report suggests LA’s homeless authority is undercounting the unhoused
An official homeless count captured just 68% of the unsheltered population in three key city of L.A. neighborhoods this year, according to a RAND Corporation report released today. RAND researchers also found the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority's annual count decreased in accuracy over the past two years. The Santa Monica-based think tank conducts its own professional count in Skid Row, Venice, and Hollywood. Despite its assertion of a LAHSA undercount, the RAND report shows homelessness declining in the areas it surveys in recent years — a trend LAHSA has reported across the region. Joining us to discuss this study’s findings is Louis Abramson, adjunct senior physical scientist at RAND and lead author of the report.
Austin Beutner announces run for L.A. Mayor
On Monday, former Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent Austin Beutner announced his run for mayor of the city of Los Angeles. Beutner’s plans complicate Mayor Karen Bass’ bid to retain her position in the 2026 election. Beutner is the first high-profile competitor officially facing off with Bass, who, since the Palisades Fire, has faced a barrage of criticism over her capability to lead the second-largest city in the United States. Beutner is now one of eight candidates vying for the position. Austin Beutner joins us on AirTalk this morning to talk about his candidacy and vision for Los Angeles.

California senator Adam Schiff on redistricting, government shutdown, and more
In just a few weeks, California voters will take to the polls and decide whether to adopt new electoral maps designed to give Democrats more seats in the House of Representatives. This special election reflects similar redistricting efforts by both parties across the country. Meanwhile, the federal government shutdown has entered day 16 with no clear path to reopening on site. Today on AirTalk, U.S. senator for California Adam Schiff joins the program to brief listeners on these topics and more.
Triple Play: Dodgers back home, up 2-0 in the NLCS
The Dodgers square off against the Milwaukee Brewers for Game 3 of the NLCS this afternoon, after taking a 2-0 lead in enemy territory Tuesday night. Teoscar Hernández heated up early on after hitting a home run in the second inning of Game 2. This comes after a bizarre double play stump in the NLCS opener on Monday. Dodger fans anxious to see Shohei Ohtani pitch again will have to wait for Game 4, as manager Dave Roberts said, "This potentially lines him up if we need a Game 7 out of the 'pen." On Tuesday night during Game 2 of the series, Yoshinobu Yamamoto dominated the mound as he became the first Dodger pitcher to toss a complete postseason game since 2004. Meanwhile, the Brewers look to get their mojo right as they are still looking for the first win of the series against LA. Today on AirTalk, we're joined by Molly Knight, sportswriter and author of the ‘The Long Game’ baseball newsletter and Nick Roman, host of ‘Roman on the Radio’ and former host of All Things Considered on LAist to talk about the Dodger postseason.
