99 Cents Store Only To Close Its Doors– We Discuss How We Got Here & Hear About Its Impact On Listeners

A fixture in the lives of many working-class Angelenos will no longer be around much longer, with 99 Cents Store Only closing all of its stores. The bargain retail chain, based locally in Commerce, has been a place for many to get affordably-priced products (and quality, for those who can spot it). Given the scope of this chain’s closure… it does beg the question if this was an issue tied to inflation or just a large, private business struggling to manage its finances. Joining us this morning on AirTalk to talk about the closure is Sucharita Kodali, e-commerce analyst at Forrester Research, a technology research and advisory firm based in Cambridge, MA. Join the conversation: If you frequent 99 Cents Only Stores… are the closures going to impact your finances? What are your memories of shopping at these stores? Food Friday: Puff, Puff, Pass The Empanada Please

Many cuisines around the world have some sort of fried dough food item with a filling: think calzones from Italy, samosas from India, pupusas from El Salvador. Another example? Empanadas. The word “empanada” comes from the Spanish word “empanar” meaning “to bread.” They are a traditional South American dish that have been around for centuries and can be filled with a variety of different ingredients, but most traditionally, beef or chicken. Today on AirTalk we’re talking about the great variety of the empanada and how they’re made with co-owner of World Empanadas, a family-owned and -operated business in Burbank, Rosalia Hirtz.

FilmWeek Feature: Larry Talks To Amanda McBaine & Jesse Moss, Directors Of Documentary ‘Girls State’

A new documentary, directed by Emmy-award-winning directors Amanda McBaines and Jesse Moss, looks into the decision-making of 500 civically engaged teen girls in Missouri who go through the process of electing their peers to different branches of government. This follows the 2020 documentary “Boys State,” which won them their Primetime Emmy, following teen boys in Texas building their democratically-elected government. For this week’s FilmWeek feature, we talk to Amanda McBaines and Jesse Moss about their second look into teen-led governments and the takeaways they got from their subjects in ‘Girls State.’

“Girls State” releases on Apple TV+ on Friday, April 5.
