The movie “John Rabe,” opens in Los Angeles on Friday, June 4. It’s based on the true story of a German named John Rabe who saved thousands of Chinese from the Japanese “Rape of Nanking” in 1937. The story is morally and politically complicated because Rabe was a Nazi party member, and at one point, the Nazi Swastika flag became a symbol not of horror, but of safety.
The movie stars Ulrich Tukur (above) as Rabe and Steve Buscemi as an American doctor who forms an uneasy alliance with him.
