More than 1,000 people in Los Angeles County have now died from COVID-19.

County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said the coronavirus pandemic "has amplified the cracks in our society, including the care and protection of people who are older and medically fragile."

People living in poorer areas are dying at a rate about three times that of communities with low poverty rates.
